The Balkans have remained an area of conflict though settled during accent times. Bulgaria was formed in the year 681.  Greece since the time of antiquity.  Romania since settled by the Romans. Serbia, which later expanded into Yugoslavia, was the flash point for the start of the First World War which led the way to the end of the "Age of Empires ".
