From the fall of the Roman Empire up to middle of the 1800's, Italy was divided into a number of independent states and kingdoms presided over by wealthy families or hereditary rulers. The 19th century unification movement created the Kingdom of Italy. The Kingdom lasted until the rise of a fascist state after World War I. The gold coinage reflects Italy's two Kings.
