From the 15th century, Russia was one of the principal powers in Eastern Europe and Asia. After nearly 400 years of feudal society, collapse and change were inevitable. Finland was originally a part of Sweden when, in 1709, it was annexed by Russia.  It gained independence after the Russian Revolution in 1917.
